While listening to the radio
in the car, I was struck by the importance of some of the one-liners
that I heard. Though important or sometimes shocking, they generally
go unnoticed.
The Radio Series was done in response
to these statements heard on the radio.
- We are sending our children to fight other
children
- Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stigletz
and Harvard University's Linds Bilmes have just published "The
Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraqi Conflict. According
to these authors we need to calculate the long term cost of
care for the wounded and all the borrowed money. Further, " .
. . the entire federal budget for autism research, about 108
million, is spent every four hours in Iraq. Further " .
. . with just 1 trillion, the country could provide 43 million
students with scholarships for four years in public universities.
- In 2003, one million signatures were collected
in Costa Rica to insist that the National Assembly approve
stricter laws to protect children. At present the sentence
for stealing a car is 15 years in jail whereas the sentence
for stealing a child is just two years.
- We buy roses for Valentine's Day,
but the pickers suffer from various illnesses from the pesticide
used in growing the flowers.
